About Bihar & Jharkhand
Bihar, often referred to as the “Land of Buddha,” has a history that dates back to ancient times. It was the birthplace of Lord Buddha, who preached his first sermon at Sarnath, near Varanasi, a city that falls within the boundaries of present-day Bihar. This historical significance has made Bihar a center of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world.
Bihar is also known for its rich agricultural tradition. The Gangetic plains that dominate the landscape of the state are incredibly fertile and have contributed significantly to India’s agricultural production. The state is a major producer of rice, wheat, and maize.
One of Bihar’s architectural wonders is the Nalanda University, an ancient center of learning that attracted scholars from across Asia. Although the original university was destroyed, it has been resurrected as a modern university dedicated to Buddhist studies and research.
The state is also home to Bodh Gaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a symbol of spiritual awakening and attracts devotees and tourists alike.
Jharkhand is internationally famous for its rich mineral resources. The state is a major producer of minerals like coal, iron ore, mica, bauxite, and limestone. Its substantial contribution to India’s mineral production, particularly in the field of coal and iron ore, has made it renowned on the global map. The steel industry, in particular, relies heavily on the iron ore reserves found in Jharkhand, and the state plays a pivotal role in the country’s industrial and economic landscape.
Jharkhand is also known for its diverse and vibrant tribal culture. The state is home to numerous indigenous tribal communities, each with its unique culture, traditions, and languages. The Santhal, Munda, Ho, Oraon, and other tribal groups have their own distinct art forms, music, and dance. This cultural diversity and the preservation of tribal heritage have earned Jharkhand recognition globally, attracting cultural enthusiasts, anthropologists, and researchers.
Jharkhand is famous for its picturesque natural beauty. The state features lush green forests, rolling hills, rivers, and captivating waterfalls. The stunning landscapes, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries make Jharkhand an attractive destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The state’s Valmiki National Park and Betla National Park offer opportunities for jungle safaris and the chance to observe diverse flora and fauna.
